I grew up knowing God , but had no idea what it meant to have a personal relationship with Him.  Mom took my brother and myself to church every week and so that's what I thought being a Christian was all about.  As a family, we prayed over the evening meals and I prayed before sleep.  As time went on, I felt an emptiness, a missing feeling.  Mom told me it was that I was missing my dad since he traveled often.  But there was a lingering emptiness and lack of peace deep inside.  I had a few misfortunate experiences during adolescence--some due to sin in a fallen world and some due to my own sinful nature.
I heard the clear Gospel message in my 20's.  This was the first time I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior who came to rescue me from sin and separation from God through His death and resurrection.  My baptism is such a special memory.  I remember feeling all my sin wash off and feeling so light when I was lifted out of the water.  Just the thought that His forgiveness was free and I now had assurance of eternal life, gave me so much joy!  However, I wasn't aware that transformation was not just a one-time event.  It was an on-going process.
After experiencing the pain of divorce and walking through the complexities of remarriage plus blended family, I could feel God drawing me back to Himself in a new and profound way.  I was confronted with the truth of repentance, not just sorrow for my sin.  Repentance meant I needed to turn away from sin.  During this season of my life, i began feeling and hearing the indwelling of Holy Spirit.  He wasn't just a vague presence.  He was and is my constant companion, a convicting, comforting guide.
No longer do I live with one foot in the world and one foot in the Kingdom.  Why?  Because the Lord continued to pursue me and I pursued Him as well  I responded with obedience, my habits changed, my thoughts and actions changed, my friendship groups changed.  I intentionally surrounded myself with devoted disciples of Christ--people who lived their faith with authenticity and purpose.
Through this journey I have come to understand that following Jesus means daily surrender.  it is not about perfection, but transformation.  I want to become more like Christ, one obedient step at a time.  Today, I live with greater intentionality, seeking to listen to Holy Spirit's leading and to invest in making disciples.  What once felt like "religion" has become a living relationship with my Savior, Christ Jesus, who continues to transform me daily.
